NEWS:
Conventional cybersecurity approaches are falling short
Traditional security approaches that rely on reactive, detect-and-respond measures and tedious manual processes can’t keep pace with the volume, variety, and velocity of current threats, according to Skybox Security. As a result, 27% of all executives and 40% of CSOs say their organizations are not well prepared for today’s rapidly shifting threat landscape. A tipping point for conventional cybersecurity. On average, organizations experienced 15% more cybersecurity incidents in 2021 than in 2020. In addition, “material breaches”— defined as “those generating a large loss, compromising many records, or having a significant impact on business operations” — jumped 24.5%.
Defense in Depth to minimize the impact of ransomware attacks
Ransomware attacks continue to plague organizations globally regardless of their size. In a press release by the NCC group that preceded the Annual Threat Monitor Report 2021 published for the year 2021, there were an estimated 2,690 ransomware attacks, a 92.7% increase from 2020s figures of 1,389. The increase of ransomware attacks builds upon the general gradual rise in cyber-attacks in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Ransomware accounted for roughly 65.4% of global cyber incidents in 2021. North America and Europe accounted for the most attacked regions with 53% and 30% of all the attacks respectively.
State-Backed Hackers Targeting Journalists in Widespread Espionage Campaigns
Nation-state hacking groups aligned with China, Iran, North Korea, and Turkey have been targeting journalists to conduct espionage and spread malware as part of a series of campaigns since early 2021. “Most commonly, phishing attacks targeting journalists are used for espionage or to gain key insights into the inner workings of another government, company, or other area of state-designated import,” Proofpoint said in a report shared with The Hacker News. The ultimate goal of the intrusions, the enterprise security firm said, is to gain a competitive intelligence edge or spread disinformation and propaganda.

Why Small And Medium-Sized Companies Face More Cyber Challenges Than Large Ones: Survey
The recent warning from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) about the impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a wake-up call for all companies and organizations. The failure to pay attention to and act on those threats could create crises for business leaders. The agency said the invasion could impact organizations both within and beyond the region, including malicious cyber activity against the U.S. homeland.” This could include “a response to the unprecedented economic costs imposed on Russia by the U.S. and our allies and partners.”
How the FBI quietly added itself to criminals’ instant message conversations
Motherboard has disclosed some information about Operation Trojan Shield, in which the FBI intercepted messages from thousands of encrypted phones around the world. These messages are now used in courts across the world as corroborating evidence. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Dutch National Police (Politie), and the Swedish Police Authority (Polisen), in cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and 16 other countries, carried out one of the largest and most sophisticated law enforcement operations to date in the fight against encrypted criminal activities with the support of Europol.

Microsoft: 10,000 Organizations Targeted in Large-Scale Phishing Campaign
Microsoft has warned users about a large-scale phishing campaign that has been targeting over 10,000 organizations to perform follow-on business email compromise (BEC). As part of the campaign, the attackers have been using adversary-in-the-middle (AiTM) phishing sites to steal credentials, and have been hijacking sign-in sessions to bypass authentication even with multifactor authentication (MFA) enabled. AiTM is a phishing technique in which the attackers deploy a proxy webserver between the user and the site they are trying to sign in to, to intercept the user’s credentials and their session cookie, which enables the user to remain authenticated to the site.

Callback Malware Campaigns Impersonate CrowdStrike and Other Cybersecurity Companies
On July 8, 2022, CrowdStrike Intelligence identified a callback phishing campaign impersonating prominent cybersecurity companies, including CrowdStrike. The phishing email implies the recipient’s company has been breached and insists the victim call the included phone number. This campaign leverages similar social-engineering tactics to those employed in recent callback campaigns including WIZARD SPIDER’s 2021 BazarCall campaign. This campaign will highly likely include common legitimate remote administration tools (RATs) for initial access, off-the-shelf penetration testing tools for lateral movement, and the deployment of ransomware or data extortion.
MALWARE:
New Android malware on Google Play installed 3 million times
A new Android malware family on the Google Play Store that secretly subscribes users to premium services was downloaded over 3,000,000 times. The malware, named ‘Autolycos,’ was discovered by Evina’s security researcher Maxime Ingrao to be in at least eight Android applications, two of which are still available on the Google Play Store at the time of this writing. The two apps still available are named ‘Funny Camera’ by KellyTech, which has over 500,000 installations, and ‘Razer Keyboard & Theme’ by rxcheldiolola, which counts over 50,000 installs on the Play Store.
Hive ransomware decryption key released as gang evolves its tactics
A decryption key for malware deployed by the ransomware gang Hive has been released in response to an uptick in activity from the gang in the past three months. Hive has also switched to a more complex coding language called Rust, which is harder to decrypt, making the key even more valuable. The decryption tool for version five of Hive’s malware has been released by a malware analyst and reverse engineer known publicly as reecDeep. The key can be found on Github and was created in order to try and quell recent mounting attacks by the gang.
VULNERABILITIES:
Microsoft Issues Fixes for 84 Vulnerabilities: Here’s What to Patch Now
The July security update also includes fixes for four elevation of privilege vulnerabilities in the company’s perennially buggy Windows Print Spooler technology, and more than 30 bugs in its Azure Site Recovery disaster recovery service. At least 12 of the 84 flaws disclosed today enable remote code execution, 11 were information disclosure-related, and four enable bypass of security features. Most of the remaining flaws enabled elevation of privilege.
New UEFI firmware flaws impact over 70 Lenovo laptop models
The UEFI firmware used in several laptops made by Lenovo is vulnerable to three buffer overflow vulnerabilities that could enable attackers to hijack the startup routine of Windows installations. Lenovo has issued a security advisory disclosing three medium severity vulnerabilities tracked as CVE-2022-1890, CVE-2022-1891, and CVE-2022-1892. The first is an issue in the ReadyBootDxe driver used in some Lenovo notebook products, while the last two are buffer overflow bugs in the SystemLoadDefaultDxe driver.
