Third International Workshop on Combating Transnational Crime in Africa

/

This week we have participated in the ‘Third International Workshop on Combating Transnational Crime in Africa’.

This conference which was hosted by Stellenbosch University, and led by noelle van der waag-cowling, focussed upon the theme of ‘The African Cyber Security Landscape: Countering Cyber Threat Proliferation’.

Our Project leader Enrico Calandro was part of a high level panel on the subject of Responsible State Behaviour in Cyber Space – Towards a Rules-Based Order.  The panel, which was chaired by Karen Allen included Kaleem Ahmed UsmaniAbdul-Hakeem Ajijola , Nanjira Sambuli and Trishana Ramluckan (D.Admin) ; together they looked at the key question of

What an African philosophy on norms might look like ?

From this a discussion flowed on the key tactical concepts surrounding norms

How does Africa as a continent of 55 States adopt common positions in cyber discussions?

In terms of protecting critical infrastructure – what should be the priorities for capacity building?

How do we ensure indigenous technologies are elevated in such a way that they serve African citizens?

Lots of food for thought there! As always, it was also fantastic to hear from our Botswanan colleague David Moepeng. MSc, who gave a great presentation on the success of Cybersmart Botswana. This is a Cyber Awareness campaign which Cyber4Dev has supported and funded, with expert input from Comms expert Sylvia Beamish and our country co-ordinator Nick Small over the past number of years. We’re proud of the impact it has achieved, particularly in reaching rural communities and young people across the country.

Thank you to all of the organisers for a truly memorable and thought provoking event.
